Kay Gibbons is an American author known for her novels that explore the themes of family, love, and loss. She was born in 1960 in Nash County, North Carolina, and grew up on her family's farm. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980 with a degree in English.
Her first novel, Ellen Foster, was published in 1987 and became a national bestseller. The book is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who overcomes abuse and poverty to find a new family. Gibbons has since published several other novels, including A Virtuous Woman, Charms for the Easy Life, and Sights Unseen.
Gibbons has received numerous awards and honors for her writing, including the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction, the North Carolina Award for Literature, and the Thomas Wolfe Prize. She currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her family.
